Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one. Stella Adler
This is why your kid needs to take art classes and learn to appreciate novels. Good TV shows and movies can also work, although they often only distraction you from your beaten down state, yet that is not a bad thing.
Life can be a downer. Art, even pop art, can be uplifting and inspiring. Art can relax the mind and challenge the mind at the same time. It can make you think, encourage you, and make you feel better. Art is life simulated as it should be and could be. Art can reflect the hardness of life while giving hope.
This is true even of bad art. Bad art, badly produced movies, badly written books, paintings obviously not professionally, can still help us. Art does not need to be great to be helpful.
Which brings us to violent art, horror art. And not just horror, even art consumed by masses of people have violence in it, such as movies, and games and novels. Why do we read such stuff? I suspect we are relived it is not us. Maybe the sense of relief is so much it feels good. I don’t know. But it’s weird normal good people enjoy seeing and reading about others being hurt.
