It is almost a certainty that Donald Trump will be a failure as president. I say almost because who thought he would become president, no one, me included. Yet, he will become our president and I can’t help but hope he will be better than mine and most others expectations.
That said, I feel certain he will be absolutely awful. Not only for me, a liberal, but for everyone, including conservatives and most of his own supporters. Some of his voters will refuse to see how awful he is, but for most Americans, and for most of the world, it will be a long four years. I’m not sure it will even be funny; it will be mostly sad.
So why did Trump win? This is important because it might tell us something about how strong his support will be. He lost the popular vote by almost three million votes. That is a lot and alone tells us his popular support is weak. But secondly, did those who voted for him do so because they liked him? Or did they vote for him as a protest, believing he would lose? If a significant percentage of voters voted for Trump as a protest, feeling assured he could not win, then his support is even less than the popular vote shows. Most polls showed that Trumped would lose the election, so anyone who wanted to cast a protest vote, but didn’t actually want Trump to be president, would have felt safe doing so. I choose to believe this is what happened because I would hate that so many people would want someone like Trump to be our president. To wrap this paragraph up, the first reason Trump will fail is because he has weak support.
The second reason Trump will fail is because he is not a very nice person, which is a nice way of saying he is evil. He so evil that I find it disturbing that so many people would vote for him even as a protest vote. But that’s just me. He seems to believe people are either for him or against him. What is right or wrong depends on what he feels is best for him. If other people agree with him, he likes them, if they do not, then they are his enemies. Girls are for his pleasure, and men are to be his manservants. However, if Donald Trump does have a warm spot, if he genuinely cares about children or anyone who has cancer or who are homeless and hungry, then I apologize for thinking so badly of him. But I just don’t see any goodness in him. I hope he proves me wrong, but if I’m right, his bad attitude is going to become tiresome.
The third reason Trump will fail is because he lacks experience and much of his cabinet lacks it too. I’m talking mostly about political experience but also about experience in the field they will be managing. I’m sure most of the people he is appointed are very smart. I know a few exceptions to this, but mostly they are smart. Donald himself is smart enough too. But being smart is not the same as having experience, and experience takes time. This lack of experience will lead to bad judgments and scandals. Besides Trump himself, it will be interesting to see who creates the first scandal, there will be plenty of them.
The fourth reason Trump will fail is because of conflicts of interests. Okay it has been pointed out, most by Trump himself, that he does not have to divest his business interest. And it has also been pointed out by others that Trump will have the power to pardon any other member of his inner circle who runs counter to the law. But even if that is legal, it will not be politically smart. The fastest way for Trump to turn his supporters into enemies is to make them feel he is taking advantage of them. If his supporters feel he is allowing corruption in his administration at their expense, they will not only reject him they will learn to hate him. There is nothing worse than a scorn supporter.
The fifth reason he will fail is because he cannot keep his promises. He will try hard to twist and turn events to make it seem like he is keeping them. Such as touting jobs that were already designated for the United States as being new jobs because of him personally. Not true and only a drop in the bucket anyway. He will take credit for the rising economy President Obama made possible and then if it goes into recession, he will try to blame President Obama. When he can’t build an actual wall between us and Mexico, he will say the fleet of drones he deploys is just as good. When he can’t deport millions of illegal immigrants, he will claim a few illegal immigrants caught committing crimes as a victory. He will make a show and some will believe him. But I hope most will not.
Yes, I do think Donald Trump is an evil, self-serving man, without the experience needed to do the job of president, who abuses girls and uses men, who mainly wishes to take, not give. But does he have any good characteristics? Yes. I think he is pragmatic. He can be nice if he believes that to be in his best interest. He is not stupid, well, not always. He can be smart. He seems close to his children, and I’m hoping they have a better moral compass. I do think he is motivated to have us see him positively, perhaps to even be worshipped by us; maybe that will inspire him to do the right thing.
I expect Trumps four years as president to look like a raw egg dropped and splattered all over the floor. I really see very little good about Donald Trump. But I have to remind myself that I thought it impossible that the second George Bush could be reelected. I thought it impossible that Donald Trump could win the Republican primary, and when he did, I thought it impossible he could become president. Obviously, I do not understand my fellow Americans and maybe I do not understand what is possible.
